Many TikTok users in the United States have recently started deleting the app, with the number of uninstalls jumping by nearly 150% in just five days. This wave of deletions comes after TikTok announced a big change: its U.S. operations would now be managed by a new American-led company, called a “joint venture.”
Think of it like this: Imagine your favorite video game announced that its U.S. version would now be run by a completely new team. You might wonder what that means for your game and your player data. That’s similar to what happened with TikTok.
Users became worried when they were asked to agree to an updated privacy policy. They noticed wording that said TikTok might collect sensitive personal details, like their background, sexual orientation, or even financial information. This made many people feel uncomfortable, even though it turns out this specific wording about data collection wasn’t brand new and had been in older versions of the policy.
Some big TikTok creators, who have hundreds of thousands or even millions of followers (like popular YouTubers), either deleted their accounts or reported having trouble uploading videos. While TikTok’s new U.S. team blamed some technical issues on a power outage, the general feeling of uncertainty and concern about privacy led many users to ditch the app.
Despite these deletions, most American users are still on TikTok. However, some other social media apps have seen a sudden increase in new downloads as people look for alternatives.
